Productive forces: digital socialism?

Abstract: In a discussion of Evgeny Morozov's plea for digital socialism, it is shown that the development of digital technology takes place in proprietary markets whose main players do everything they can to monopolise information. The digital Landnahme pursued by market-leading companies entails the valorisation of personal information tied to the individual. This is where the danger of technical control of human life by a profit-orientated digital elite is rooted. Their ideological solutionism serves as a cover for a surveillance capitalism, the dynamics of which boil down to the destruction of reason. Trust in the self-healing powers of the internet is therefore not enough when radical countermeasures are needed. Transparency in the collection and use of data is therefore an essential first step in steering digitalisation in a democratic direction. Internet rebels with considerable disruptive power have an important role to play here.
