Neurodivergent expatriates

Miriam Moeller, Dana L. Ott and Emily R. Russo

Chapter 10 in The Authoritative Research Guide to Expatriates, 2025, pp 269-297 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter emphasises the importance of understanding and embracing the diverse range of neurological variations within a globally mobile workforce. Based on the limited understanding of neurodiversity across cultural perspectives, we apply the concept of neurodiversity to global mobility using a social model perspective. We explain that while neurodivergent expatriates will exhibit a range of strengths, an international relocation requires neurodivergent expatriates to navigate extra challenges in relation to language and social norms, among other cultural differences. We provide individual, organisational, and societal perspectives and conclude with a future research agenda to foster neurodivergent expatriate wellbeing and inclusive global environments. This chapter aims to empower neurodivergent expatriates, accompanying family members, and those involved in the expatriation process to embrace neurodiversity and create a more (neuro)inclusive workplace.
