Expatriate health, safety, security, and wellbeing

Xavier Salamin and Samuel Balet

Chapter 14 in The Authoritative Research Guide to Expatriates, 2025, pp 383-415 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Expatriation has been associated with strengthened demands and pressures in both work and non-work environments that can impact the health and wellbeing of the individuals involved. Over the past two decades, in a context where organisations and work environments have been undergoing remarkable transformations, individual and organisational approaches to global mobility have been strongly evolving. Such developments have implications in terms of health and safety which need to be carefully understood, especially since employee health, safety, security, and wellbeing are associated with key individual and organisational outcomes. Despite its strong relevance, this topic appears to be under-researched in the field of global mobility in management and organisation studies. Therefore, the objectives of this chapter are first to review existing literature in management and organisation studies on expatriate health, safety, security, and wellbeing, and second to propose priority research directions to stimulate future studies. Organisational and government/societal implications and areas for future research are also discussed.
