Chapter 3 in The Authoritative Research Guide to Expatriates, 2025, pp 55-85 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In today's ever-evolving global business landscape, assigned expatriates (AEs) are recognised as talented individuals sent abroad by their employers to achieve critical business goals. Given the significant returns on investment AEs provide, most research in this area has concentrated on talent management (TM) strategies for AEs at the organisational level, while largely neglecting broader and finer aspects, such as macro (i.e., environmental) and micro (i.e., individual-level) dynamics. This book chapter employs a systematic literature review approach to explore the academic area of TM of AEs, highlighting new themes and suggesting areas for future research. The analysis reveals that this field is still in its early stages, with existing research divided into seven key areas: global TM; TM practices; AEs’ adjustment; diversity issues; comparison of AEs with other talent groups; interactions between AEs and host country nationals; and the characteristics of AE talent. The chapter discusses how to manage AE talent effectively for international operations and concludes with suggestions for future research.
