Ethnically and culturally diverse expatriates: a systematic literature review

Soo Min Toh, Marina Schmitz and Tjaša Cankar

Chapter 8 in The Authoritative Research Guide to Expatriates, 2025, pp 197-237 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This systematic literature review chapter focuses on ethnically and culturally diverse expatriates to identify and analyse themes within the international business and migration literature. Amidst the backdrop of multinational corporations (MNCs) deploying expatriates overseas, this chapter recognises a significant research gap: the experiences of non-WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, and Democratic) and ethnically diverse expatriates. Analysing 240 studies across 53 journals, we explore the unique challenges and contributions of these expatriates. Our findings suggest that acknowledging the cultural and ethnic diversity among expatriates can enhance organisational practices and policies, encouraging a more inclusive global workforce. The implications extend to organisational leadership, suggesting the development of inclusive training and support mechanisms that value cultural differences, fostering a genuinely diverse international business environment. The chapter lays a foundation for future research on the nuanced experiences of diverse expatriate populations, aiming to broaden the understanding of global mobility and its implications for international human resource management.
