Chapter 12 in Research Companion to Innovation in Construction, 2025, pp 248-272 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Taking a whole-of-life perspective of project procurement processes and drawing from numerous examples of current and creative procurement practices, particularly those in Australia, this chapter develops and presents a novel research-based procurement approach for targeting value-adding innovations in construction procurement. These innovative approaches should not only help to boost value for money and align processes and outcomes with relevant societal values, but also address many emerging issues associated with ever-increasing climate challenges. A framework for innovative procurement and delivery is developed, highlighting a step-by-step articulation of procurement processes that focus on meeting holistic targets. The implementation strategy of the innovative procurement functions, along with the required stakeholders’ roles, responsibilities, and coordination, is discussed with a hypothetical research-based example. The discussion also briefly touches on the UN SDGs underpinning the way towards meeting these targets, with innovative procurement and delivery that harnesses, benefits from, and contributes to their underlying drivers.
