Chapter 13 in Research Companion to Innovation in Construction, 2025, pp 274-286 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Innovation is challenging for the construction sector. Numerous factors impact innovation practices within the industry, including the complexity and project-based nature of the industry, conservative approaches to managing projects, costs to innovate, and time and resource limitations. Limited resources and lack of financial support in an organisation are seen as impediments to innovation. The practice of innovation within the construction industry also requires collaboration with multiple participants, and this is sometimes hard to achieve. However, the positive side of innovation creates organisations that are agile and can better respond to changes in practice. Against this background, the chapter will explore the following: innovation challenges for the construction industry, why the industry needs an innovation tool, the development and testing of an innovation tool, and lessons learned. By having an easy-to-use and inexpensive tool, the industry might better understand innovation and be able to improve innovation uptake.
