Innovation in construction: the perspective of developing countries
George Ofori
Chapter 3 in Research Companion to Innovation in Construction, 2025, pp 47-73 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Innovation is a driver of economic growth and development in nations and in organisations. Thus, developing countries need innovation as much as, if not more than, their industrialised counterparts. The aim of this chapter is to explore how the construction industries in developing countries can take advantage of innovation to improve their performance. It is based on a review of the literature. The chapter addresses several questions, including: what innovation is; what makes it important, especially to developing countries; and what the challenges are in seeking to attain innovation. After considering innovation in general, innovation in construction and its application in developing countries are discussed, considering the importance of innovation in construction in these countries, as well as the enablers and prerequisites. It is suggested that the approach to innovation in developing countries should differ from that in industrialised countries owing to the differences in context and resources. A research agenda is presented.
