Chapter 11 in Experimental Methods and Children's Social Care, 2025, pp 121-134 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Abstract: This chapter describes the evaluation of a social work intervention aimed at providing supervision for Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) in schools, implemented across 26 local authorities in England. Initially developed by a social worker in Bolton, the intervention was designed to support DSLs in their role and to improve the quality and appropriateness of contacts with children's social care (CSC). Despite positive qualitative feedback indicating improvements in DSL well-being and enhanced understanding between schools and CSC, the evaluation found no significant impact on primary and secondary outcomes, such as a reduction in inappropriate contacts. The chapter reflects on the challenges of measuring impact in this context and highlights the ongoing need to support DSLs and strengthen the relationship between schools and CSC.
