Moving to the tourist city: new residents’ perspectives on tourism and quality of life in Venice's historical centre

Emanuele Giordano

Chapter 13 in Handbook on Tourism Gentrification, 2025, pp 222-235 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Using Venice as a case study, this chapter explores the agency of tourism on the restructuring of social geographies in (over)touristified heritage cities. Combining a socio-demographic analysis with in-depth interviews with individuals who have moved to the area, the chapter shows how the relentless expansion of the Venice tourist dimension not only disrupts the position of the long-term residents but also increasingly compromises the city's capacity to attract and stabilise high-skilled and/or wealthy individuals into its resident population. By doing so, it expands the current understanding of how neighbourhood change occurs in touristified areas and reveals the difficulties in directly linking touristification with forms of lifestyle migration and gentrification in certain destinations.
