Tourism gentrification as a factor in urban fragmentation and inequality in Palma (Majorca, Spain)
Jesús M. González-Pérez
Chapter 16 in Handbook on Tourism Gentrification, 2025, pp 267-291 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Capital of one of the top sun and beach tourism destinations in the Mediterranean, an extraordinary old town offering a quality urban setting and heritage, excellent flight connections to Europe and the United States – these are just a few of Palma's many attractive features. Palma is home to just over 400,000 residents and attracts international investment both for speculation and as a destination for main or second home purchases by wealthy foreign nationals. Given this scenario, this chapter aims to analyse the processes behind gentrification in Palma's historical centre. The analysis of these processes is supplemented by a look into some of the main impacts and subsequent policies. The early onset of gentrification in Palma in comparison to the rest of Spain, as well as its severity, leading the city to becoming known for proposals should, however, be understood within the logic of degrowth and only as tangentially related to anti-gentrification or degentrification initiatives.
