Commercial and cultural gentrification in urban context: the case of Kadıköy in Istanbul

Chapter 23 in Handbook on Tourism Gentrification, 2025, pp 425-445 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the gradual gentrification of Yeldeğirmeni, a historic neighbourhood of Kadıköy district in Istanbul, as it becomes a hub for local and international tourists. In the last decades, the area has undergone significant changes driven by the influx of a young creative class and Erasmus students accompanied by the rise of trendy cultural venues and cafés that have replaced the existing retailscape. These developments have repositioned Yeldeğirmeni as a “fashionable neighbourhood”, combining the rich historic architectural heritage with modern artistic consumption spaces. The chapter argues that the gentrification of Yeldeğirmeni is characterised by a transformation in urban space through lifestyle and culture, marked by the Airbnbsation of the residential stock to accommodate tourists. By analysing these dynamics, the research aims to provide a deeper understanding of how gentrification unfolds in a relatively lesser-known touristic setting, shedding light on the complex interplay between the long-term residents and the new urban tourists.
