Tourism gentrification: a literature review
Sandra Guinand
Chapter 2 in Handbook on Tourism Gentrification, 2025, pp 22-38 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The concept of tourism gentrification embraces several definitions, depending on the process and transformation it implies. There are many definitions of tourism gentrification, but none has yet been universally acknowledged. This chapter will explore the literature about tourism gentrification, from its coining by Gotham (2015) to the end of 2023, in order to investigate the birth, development and main features of the concept. Three steps will lead to the accomplishment of these goals: (1) Setting up a search strategy for a systematic literature review to collect a representative subset of papers about tourism gentrification using Google Scholar and Scopus. (2) Storing the selected subset in an ad hoc database to synthesise the literature review. (3) Organising the literature review subset to extract quantitative and qualitative data and information about the evolution of tourism gentrification. I propose a literature review taxonomy through five specific analyses: (1) Time analysis, to explore the causes of the trend of tourism gentrification literature in recent years; (2) Terminology analysis, to examine how and where this concept was born and whether there have been events that have influenced its development; (3) Definitions analysis, to select and compare the most cited and validated definitions of tourism gentrification; (4) Typology analysis, to investigate whether tourism gentrification is considered in specific urban strategies pursued by governments; (5) Geographic analysis, to understand where tourism gentrification is mostly concentrated in the world and what its main characteristics are.
