Capturing tourism gentrification-induced displacement in Reykjavík: land use changes and stories of those displaced

Anne-Cécile Mermet

Chapter 5 in Handbook on Tourism Gentrification, 2025, pp 71-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter aims to capture the different forms of displacement caused by tourism gentrification after the tourism boom in 101 Reykjavík, the city centre of the Icelandic capital. It focuses on the different land use changes that have resulted from the sudden growth of tourism in the neighbourhood, and explores how they have triggered different forms of displacement by drawing on the stories of users who have experienced displacement. Three types of land use changes are examined: (1) the construction of new hotels, (2) the development of short-term rentals, and (3) the proliferation of tourist shops. The chapter describes how tourism has taken over the neighbourhood, showing that it has not only replaced but also displaced existing activities and users. It analyses the different types of displacement caused by tourism development in both their material and emotional dimensions by drawing on interviews with displaced residents and shopkeepers.
