A theoretical debate on gentrification and touristification: drawbacks, limitations and ambivalences

Jorge Sequera

Chapter 7 in Handbook on Tourism Gentrification, 2025, pp 102-117 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the ambivalences, limitations and temporary synergies between gentrification and touristification, examining how both processes transform urban space through distinct social, political and economic dynamics. Through a theoretical approach, the chapter argues that touristification cannot be reduced to a simple vehicle of residential or spatial gentrification, as its causes and consequences follow distinct logics. The expansion of the urban tourist economy drives transformations that do not always entail class antagonism, and the co-existence of transnational classes and tourists results in differentiated uses of urban space. To address this complexity, the chapter establishes theoretical distinctions between gentrification, touristification and transnational gentrification, providing a conceptual foundation for understanding these (sometimes) overlapping yet distinct processes. Finally, it reflects on shared structural factors, such as real estate speculation, public-private collaboration and the hegemonisation of platform urbanism, and it offers insights for future discussions on urban transformation in a globalised context.
