Chapter 24 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Trade, 2026, pp 118-123 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this entry, we review the impact of trade on key labor-market outcomes, namely wages and inequality, gender discrimination and gaps, and unemployment in developing countries. Various types of frameworks (with and without intersectoral mobility, with and without search frictions) are considered. Firm-level, industry-level, and state/province-level evidence is provided. The effects on any given labor-market outcome vary substantially across countries, across states or provinces within the same country, and across firms. These differences are driven by differences in firm location and ownership structure, local institutions, and other complementary domestic policies. Finally, we provide possible avenues for future research.
