Short in-class activities to promote critical thinking

Chapter 14 in Teaching Critical Thinking in Political Science, 2025, pp 133-142 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Critical thinking is a key skill learned by students during their college career. Critical thinking skills are highly sought after by a variety of employers and help students better navigate the world around them. While longer paper assignments, such as research papers, are often used by professors to help build critical thinking skills, research shows that students can also hone these skills through shorter in-class assignments. This chapter provides a discussion of how professors can help students practice their critical thinking skills using short in-class writing assignments and exercises. Examples of such assignments are included to give specific ideas to professors for how they can use their time in class to help students build and hone their critical thinking skills.
