Critical thinking in political science: some reflections on conceptualization, measurement, and the future
John Ishiyama
Chapter 16 in Teaching Critical Thinking in Political Science, 2025, pp 157-167 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter, I argue that we need to move the discipline toward a reconceptualization of critical thinking. I suggest disaggregating the concept into three dimensions to better measure the effects of teaching innovations designed to promote critical thinking. These include critical thinking as: (1) information literacy; (2) analytical and research skills; and (3) self-reflection and awareness. I then examine the chapters in this volume and discuss how they fit into this three-part conceptualization of critical thinking. Finally, I call for greater attention to the development of measures of critical thinking skills, particularly those that can demonstrate the lasting impact of our pedagogy on the development of such skills in our students.
