Introduction to Part II − simulations

Abstract: This chapter serves as the introduction to the book's section on simulations. In the last three decades, simulations have become an increasingly important pedagogical tool in fostering critical thinking in political science classes. Our authors in this section analyze how two very different kinds of simulations − one which attempts to teach basic ideas of jurisprudence, and one which attempts to inform students about the fundamental institutional workings of the European Union − can help to develop critical thinking skills. Overall, they conclude that the challenges involved in running a successful simulation – time, planning, resources, and evaluation – are more than offset by the potential benefit to students’ critical thinking and its associated skills of analysis, synthesis, and deep understanding of complex content.
