Abstract:
This chapter provides a short introduction to the section of this volume that focuses on countering cognitive bias. The contributors included in this section offer insights for helping students work through their own preconceptions as well as techniques for preparing them to deal with issues like misinformation and cultural bias. The authors here utilize strategies like student-designed course modules, the creation of memes, discourse analysis, and more to encourage students to recognize and overcome instances of cognitive bias. They find that flexible and creative instruction strategies that invite students to be active participants in their own education are key elements for confronting issues of bias effectively and for guiding students away from prejudgment and toward critical thinking.
