Chapter 3 in Research Handbook on Inflation, 2025, pp 35-60 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the concept of core inflation, its relevance for policymakers and a variety of approaches taken for the construction of informative core measures. After reviewing some empirical patterns displayed by US inflation data and discussing the conceptual issues around measurement, we provide a unified framework to interpret some widely used core measures and compare their relative properties.
