Neo-institutionalism: the role of institutions in political-economic performance
John L. Campbell
Chapter 1 in Handbook of Comparative Political Economy, 2025, pp 30-47 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter reviews the development of neo-institutional theory in comparative political economy. It begins with early institutional explanations of variation in national economic performance. This is followed by a discussion of the historical institutionalist and economic governance approaches and then the varieties of capitalism school and its challengers, including those emphasizing the important role of norms, values and ideas as central to economic decision-making and action.
