Chapter 7 in Weak versus Strong Sustainability, 2025, pp 171-177 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter concludes the book by summarising the exploration of weak sustainability (WS) and strong sustainability (SS) paradigms. It highlights the challenges in evaluating the substitutability of natural capital and in measuring sustainability. The chapter emphasises the need for a nuanced approach to preserving critical forms of natural capital, considering opportunity costs and ethical considerations. It also discusses the limitations of current sustainability indicators, advocating for separate measures for each critical form of natural capital rather than a single overall measure of SS. The chapter calls for humility and caution in sustainability decision-making, acknowledging the complexity and uncertainty involved.
