Financialisation and space: from fragmentation of geographical studies to planetary financialisation

Abstract: An embodiment of contemporary capitalist transformations, the conflict-ridden expansion of financial markets is a driver in the ‘production of space’ (Lefebvre, 2013), transforming farmlands, energy plants, warehouses, mining sites, housing, and infrastructure projects into tradable financial assets. This interplay between financialisation and space has drawn global scholarly attention, particularly since the 2007–08 financial crisis. Geographically oriented research – including urban, rural, environmental, and infrastructure studies – has examined financialisation's effects across diverse spaces and regions. Yet, the literature remains highly fragmented. This introduction highlights the need for a cross-disciplinary effort to unite these ‘geographical studies of financialisation’, aiming to comprehensively map, explain, and interpret the global expansion of financial markets in the production of space, while addressing the frictions, contradictions, and limitations inherent in this process. By bridging these fragmented insights under the concept of planetary financialisation, the volume provides a more integrated understanding of how contemporary capitalism reshapes the material, ecological, and social dimensions of space.
