 Grounding planetary financialisation: assetisation in theories of rentier capitalism, asset economy, and asset manager capitalismFélix Adisson Chapter 2 in Handbook on Financialisation and Space, 2026, pp 22-34 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: Assetisation is the process through which both material and immaterial entities are converted into revenue-generating assets. Coined in 2015 by Kean Birch, it has rapidly gained prominence within the fields of social studies of finance, critical geography, and political economy. Across numerous publications, its application spans a wide array of subjects, from agriculture data to baseball players and social impact investments. In light of the risk of a ‘conceptual speculative bubble’ (Wacquant, 2022), this chapter provides an analytical definition of assetisation before linking it to three frameworks of financialised capitalism: Asset Economy, Rentier Capitalism, and Asset Manager Capitalism. Used in this way, assetisation can serve to elucidate the relationship between financialisation and the production of space, opening three avenues for research on planetary financialisation that focus on assetisation's interaction with macroeconomic policies, accounting categories, and the social life of assets.
