 Asset manager capitalism: financial reintermediation, spatial accumulation, and uneven geographiesAntoine Guironnet Chapter 3 in Handbook on Financialisation and Space, 2026, pp 35-49 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: Asset manager capitalism is a framework gaining traction in the study of the financialisation of the economy and (urban) space. Centring the analysis on asset management companies, it contributes to highlighting their key role in the circulation and accumulation of capital across space – and, in the case of real estate and infrastructure, through the production of space. By factoring in their business model and market characteristics, it also advances the understanding of how financial power is exercised. Additionally, this framework sheds light on the (re)production of uneven development, from the accumulation by wealthy clients to the hyperselective geographies of investment. Using the case of commercial real estate in France, I show how this twofold contribution can be brought further through a meso-level approach. Eventually, I discuss its shifting conceptualisation of power, the uneven development of asset management capitalism, and its connection with earlier and ongoing debates in financialisation studies.
