Waiting for Godot: disjunct relations in the Canadian mining industry

Abstract: This chapter explores the intricate financial dynamics of scale within the mining industry. It delves into the dual and contradictory character of mining as both deeply localised and highly financialised. I introduce the concept of disjunct relations to analyse the implications of this contradiction, tracing their historical evolution, and understanding their impact on regional livelihoods. Three disjunct relations are identified and analysed: speculative, ownership, and sustainability disjunct relations. They overlap in time to cover the different historical developments of the industry and dimensions of the uneven spatial relation between mining regions and the leading financial and corporate actors of the industry. These include the historical top-down speculative relation, the ownership dynamics underlying a specific social contract and colonial endeavour, and the so-called inclusive sustainable mining relation within a financialised context. The chapter focuses on Canada and underscores the complex interplay between financial interests, spatial dynamics, and socio-economic structures within the industry.
