Introduction: revealing the unrecognized and under-valued contributions of women heterodox economists
Lynne Chester
A chapter in The Elgar Companion to Women and Heterodox Economics, 2025, pp 1-18 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Historically, the contributions of women economic scholars have been generally overlooked, apart for a few notable exceptions like Joan Robinson. Since the 1990s a growing literature has illuminated many of these overlooked contributions. However, we suggest this discourse has ‘bounded’ our understanding of these contributions. Much has been biographical, US-centric, and framed within the history of economic thought. To start pulling back this ‘knowledge bounding,’ the primary purpose of this collection is to bring to the fore overlooked theoretical and methodological contributions of many women to heterodox economic scholarship. The chapters cover the dominant heterodox traditions, are authored by established, mid-career, and emerging women scholars from origins beyond Anglophone countries, and present considerable evidence of the influence of Feminist Economics. The collection is structured in three parts: why women are heterodox economists; the contributions of women to heterodox economics traditions; and how women are advancing heterodox economics.
