Gender, class, and African development: reflections on my path to heterodox economics

Lynda Pickbourn

Chapter 9 in The Elgar Companion to Women and Heterodox Economics, 2025, pp 138-151 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, I reflect on my journey to becoming a heterodox economist whose primary area of interest is Africa. The chapter begins with a discussion of the formative influences of my childhood and teenage years, namely, growing up in Ghana during a period of economic crisis and austerity. Next, it traces my evolving engagement and growing dissatisfaction with Neoclassical Economics, first as an undergraduate and then as a high-school economics teacher. The chapter then highlights the events that led me to enrol in a heterodox economics department for graduate study. The final section of the chapter discusses my contributions to the study of economic development in Africa.
