Chapter 15 in The Elgar Companion to Women and Heterodox Economics, 2025, pp 230-249 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Despite facing a history of exclusion and marginalization, Black women economists have made significant scholarly contributions and helped diversify the economics profession. The role, however, of a Black woman economist has been more than to conduct research and publish findings. It also involves advocating for the full participation of their communities in American society and the African diaspora, as well as promoting their inclusion in the economics profession. This is a unique responsibility that no other woman carries. Nina E. Banks’ work on Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander, the first Black American economist, has generated increased interest in understanding the contributions of Black women in economics. This chapter examines the contributions made by Black women, like Phyliss Wallace, who helped diversify the economics profession for women and Black women. It also presents some of their perspectives on the legacy they hope to leave behind.
