Feminist Institutionalism

Chapter 17 in The Elgar Companion to Women and Heterodox Economics, 2025, pp 264-278 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Feminist arguments are evident in the works of the Original Institutional Economics’ founder, Thorstein Veblen, particularly from his examination of the societal roles of women. While early scholars of this heterodox economics tradition paid little attention to these arguments, later scholars aligned their institutionalist approach, informed by Veblen, with feminist theory, giving rise to Feminist Institutionalism. This chapter examines Veblen's feminist arguments, studies drawing on these arguments, and the contributions of women to Feminist Institutionalism in the Journal of Economic Issues, the oldest heterodox economics journal and the key publication for institutional economists working in the tradition pioneered by Veblen. The latter is done through a bibliometric analysis that identifies the most prolific women authors and the most relevant articles addressing gender issues and feminist theorizing.
