Body and planet: re-embedding and re-embodying the economy

Molly Scott Cato

Chapter 21 in The Elgar Companion to Women and Heterodox Economics, 2025, pp 321-333 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The women economists whose work is considered in this chapter have developed a particular form of economic theory that re-embeds economic theory both in human bodies and in our planet. They have identified the disconnection of our economy from the physical systems it is a part of as a fundamental cause of disease and planetary crisis. These ecofeminist economists have used insights from women from Indigenous and other communities in their theorizations and have retrieved and revalidated traditional forms of economic organisation that have been sidelined in post-rational societies. Their work has great contemporary salience, since they argue that understanding the economy as being fundamentally grounded in these relationships is a necessary step towards building the just and ecologically respectful economy that sustainability demands.
