At the frontier of economic development: researching gender and institutional change in fragile environments

Holly Ritchie

Chapter 25 in The Elgar Companion to Women and Heterodox Economics, 2025, pp 381-396 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Beyond the realm of most studies in heterodox economics, my research explores gender and institutional change in ‘fragile’ contexts including in conflict zones, displacement contexts, and remote and marginalized areas. Such studies can shine a light on complex socio-cultural dynamics at the frontier of economic development, especially with growing pressures such as climate change and migration, and new opportunities such as technology and digital inclusion. In this chapter, I discuss institutions in economic development in fragile contexts and reflect on my academic experiences as a heterodox economist, including my evolving research approach, and balancing links to practice. Elaborating on my research findings, I share some emerging insights on institutional change, particularly in Afghanistan, Jordan, and Kenya, and highlight opportunities for future research, related challenges, and potential new research directions.
