Abstract:
I was introduced to economics at moments of social and economic crisis, when the discipline had good reason to rethink its foundations. Heterodox economics resonated with my subsequent vision of economics as contested and socially embedded. With the support of a pluralist graduate programme and a welcoming research community, I have developed a research agenda examining how social stratification both reproduces and reflects disparities in households’ balance sheets by race and gender in the United States. Studying Feminist Economics alongside applied econometric methods gave me the chance to apply a wide range of tools and communicate to many audiences, from heterodox and mainstream journals to popular media outlets. Heterodox economists also helped me develop inclusive classrooms where students can think critically about economics in the liberal arts tradition. Moving forward, I hope my scholarship and teaching will contribute to a heterodox economics community that continues to be relevant and supportive.
