Economics for all: time to tackle gendered constraints

Abstract:
In recent years, systemic inequalities within academia have come to the forefront, with universities around the world claiming to tackle gender inequality. Too often, the chosen initiatives rely on awards certifying the degree of gender equality and individualized measures that aim to help women to assimilate within the existing system without substantially changing the conditions that give rise to systemic inequalities. The discipline of economics particularly has been ridden with discriminatory practices, hindering women from reaching senior positions. Addressing systemic inequalities within the discipline is not only important from a moral perspective but also from a social perspective as economic concepts and research underpin policy settings. This chapter will first outline the key constraints women experience within academia before discussing their impact on pension policies within the United Kingdom. Emanating from a lack of gendered perspectives within influential academic and policy circles, pension policies have been set to ignore large groups within society.
