Gender and the Sri Lankan debt crisis: why feminist perspectives matter

Chapter 7 in The Elgar Companion to Women and Heterodox Economics, 2025, pp 107-120 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Using Sri Lanka's debt crisis and adopting a feminist political economy perspective, I outline how my initial academic trajectory in heterodox economics became a boon in advocating for debt justice for this country. My professional path is non-linear and for almost the past two decades, I have come to see myself as a development geographer. However, my continued engagement with Feminist Economics facilitated championing global debt justice and changes in the economic architecture of (finance) capitalism—as this also matters for countries in debt distress, including Sri Lanka.
