The development of an IP protection strategy for Jamaican cannabis

Natalie Corthésy

Chapter 8 in Intellectual Property and Cannabis, 2025, pp 161-178 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Economic success post-British colonial rule has been characterised by the exploitation of Jamaica's abundant natural resources and the resilience of its people. The Ganja economy in Jamaica epitomises this. Ganja, and its ascendency from vice grip regulation to decriminalised industry, has been the focal point for policy and lawmakers. Their strategy conceptualised providing the springboard needed to enable and support cannabis stakeholders in their quest for heightened economic growth and market sustainability. However, despite apparent natural advantages and its national competitive identity for ganja, Jamaica continues to lag behind in the global cannabis market. This chapter will consider the status quo, gaps in the legal and policy framework that underpin the cannabis industry in Jamaica, and the opportunities that can be leveraged by the increased adoption of IP protection mechanisms. This is the maverick.
