Abstract: This chapter provides historical, legislative, and organizational background on the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Included in this chapter is the evolution of legislation that resulted in the establishment of the NIH, including attendant historical events. The organizational structure of the NIH is discussed in terms of its Institutes and Centers, along with a description of each, and the related R&D support for the NIH over time is discussed.
