Chapter 5 in Small Business Innovation in the Public Interest, 2025, pp 63-81 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter offers an epistemological perspective of the source of knowledge that National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded firms rely on for the conduct of their SBIR-funded research. Knowledge sources are defined in broad terms of being internal and external to the funded firm, and in functional terms of being technology-related and experiential-related. National Research Council (NRC) data on these four categories are presented for the NIH in general, and for each Institute and Center, in particular. Relevant correlations among the knowledge sources are presented and discussed.
