The end of the Nordic balance
Magnus Ryner
Chapter 9 in Globalization in a Turbulent Era, 2025, pp 147-158 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Profound changes to the security situation in Europe's Nordic theatre have understandably been given limited attention compared to the war in Ukraine, which the latter is an immediate cause. Nevertheless, the dramatic shift in the Nordic region that had been a low-tension area since the end of the Second World War to one where tensions are rapidly escalating between increasingly antagonistic parties warrants much more attention. This chapter offers a historical-structural analysis of the changing conditions that have re-activated old, even ancient, enmities in which the consensus around a ‘Nordic balance’ has been replaced by a consensus behind a ‘coalition of all’ against Russia.
