Accessibility measurement

Bert van Wee

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 4-5 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: After introducing the concept of accessibility, this contribution gives an overview of categories of accessibility indicators. It then discusses the trade-off between ease of communication and scientific rigour of these indicator types. It next explains the increasing importance of equity and accessibility, and how accessibility indicators can be used to assess the level of fairness of accessibility effects of policies.
