Agglomeration economies

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 22-23 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Cities are central to modern economies as locations for industry and employment and a productive population. Rural to urban migration attracts workers to urbanised centres where job opportunities are available, impacting living standards and quality of life. The spatial concentration of workers and workplaces increases productivity is the basis of agglomeration economies. How big cities develop is based on a trade-off between agglomeration economies on the one hand and urban costs on the other. Agglomeration economies also affect urban form. Policymakers need to remain mindful of the contribution that agglomeration economies make to healthy cities and the changes that could cause their decline.
