Intercity railways

Simon Blainey

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 206-207 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Intercity railways have played a crucial role in enabling mobility between cities since they first appeared in the nineteenth century. While their importance has declined in some contexts, in others they continue to form a key part of transport networks. They are particularly important for business and leisure travel, and also convey large volumes of bulk and intermodal freight, but in many contexts, they face challenges in controlling escalating financial costs. They are one of the most sustainable means of long-distance travel and will therefore have a major role to play in any serious efforts to decarbonise transport systems
