Islands
Maria Attard
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 208-209 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Islands are home to millions of people worldwide and share many experiences of remoteness, smallness, small industries, high costs of infrastructure, reliance on tourism, to name just a few. Many have single urban and economic centres that are dense and struggle to strike a balance between development and environmental protection. Transport is one main contributor to emissions, with tourist transport playing a major role. Key challenges exist from different geographic realities, exposing islands to several vulnerabilities. Ultimately, the impact of climate change will be greater in islands, and the calls for the greening of both tourism and transport are becoming more urgent.
