Islands ferries
Maria Lekakou
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 210-211 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Ferries serve as ‘sea bridges’ to the islands, providing essential public services marked by seasonality—often driven by tourism—and high market concentration due to substantial economic entry barriers associated with maintaining scheduled services. The limited accessibility of islands, combined with their vulnerable economies and social structures, affects their attractiveness. The concept of island transport connectivity emphasises the importance of integrating transportation systems to meet social, economic, and environmental needs to ensure that transportation remains accessible, affordable, and acceptable for living, business, and tourism for residents and visitors.
