A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 214-215 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The entry first introduces the concept of land-use planning and then explains the relationship between land use and transport systems. The concept of accessibility as an alternative approach for evaluating transport systems and services is discussed. Using the example of transit-oriented development, the key concept of utilising land-use planning to achieve sustainable transport planning objectives is described. Other planning movements that promote land use and transport integration are also briefly introduced.
