Last-mile delivery

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 220-221 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Last-mile delivery is the final segment of the goods movement to consumers that is expensive, inefficient, and has a significant impact on the environment. Both traditional and emerging carriers are responding to the demand for last-mile delivery, which is growing rapidly due to the recent growth of the e-commerce market and the COVID-19 pandemic. Last-mile delivery is costly and inefficient because each package is small and requires frequent deliveries in dense urban areas. Innovation in last-mile logistics solutions is a pressing issue in cities around the world.
