Light rail
Axel Kühn
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 222-223 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Light rail systems neighbour tramways and their features overlap. To some extent, light rail is another, more recent (“modern”) branding for urban rail systems. The main technical and operational differences relate to the level of segregation, maximum speeds and train lengths, light rail being at the heavier end. However, both are more complementary than competing, and each may apply features of the other depending on local conditions. TramTrain systems form a light rail subgroup involving the use of heavy rail infrastructure.
