Low-cost carriers
Richard Klophaus
A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 226-227 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Low-cost carriers (LCCs) are known for their focus on cost efficiency, a business model that has gained widespread adoption and prompted traditional airlines to adjust their service offerings. As the low-cost carrier market segment is maturing, airlines are developing hybrid strategies to appeal to a wider range of consumers. Beyond the airline industry, LCCs have had a profound societal impact. More accessible air travel can lead to economic benefits for regions served by LCCs. Low fares encourage more people to fly, causing increased air traffic and emissions, which pose challenges to environmental sustainability.
