Low-traffic neighbourhoods

A chapter in Elgar Encyclopedia of Transport and Society, 2025, pp 228-229 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Low-traffic neighbourhoods seek to remove or reduce through-traffic in residential areas. They do this by restricting the accessibility of motor vehicles while allowing pedestrians and cyclists to travel unimpeded. Particularly in the UK, this is an increasingly prevalent approach to managing the negative impacts of unabated motor vehicle traffic. Existing evidence points to positive health benefits derived from decreased air pollution and increased physical activity. They have, however, faced significant opposition – with debates largely framed around the equity of the distribution of benefits and unintended consequences, as well as issues of accessibility.
